Coral Cave, Surat Thani

Coral Cave, Surat Thani

Coral Cave is one of the hidden gems of Surat Thani province, located within the Ang Thong National Marine Park. This marine park is made up of over 40 small islands in the Gulf of Thailand, surrounded by stunning scenery and rich natural beauty. The cave is famous for its unique formation of stalactites and stalagmites that resemble various types of coral found under the sea. Although these are not real living corals, their shapes and patterns look so much like coral reefs that the cave earned its name “Coral Cave.” It has become a popular destination for visitors who want to experience the geological wonder combined with the peaceful marine atmosphere.

Getting There and Route to the Coral Cave

To visit Coral Cave, tourists usually take a boat from Surat Thani’s mainland or Koh Samui island. The journey takes about 1 to 2 hours depending on the weather and the route. When entering the Ang Thong archipelago, visitors will see numerous small islands scattered around with emerald green water surrounding them. Before reaching the cave itself, tourists switch to smaller boats or kayaks to paddle through a narrow entrance surrounded by limestone cliffs.

The Beauty Inside the Cave

Inside Coral Cave, the atmosphere changes to a calm and cool environment, accompanied only by the sound of dripping water and gentle boat movements. The flashlight beams reflect off the stalactites and stalagmites, making them sparkle beautifully. The formations resemble different kinds of coral—some look like mushrooms, others like sea flowers, and some like tiny castle towers. This makes the cave feel like a frozen underwater world, capturing the magic of the sea inside the limestone.
